Golf Balls - What Compression Means
When you are shopping for golf balls, you will notice a specification by the manufacturer known as compression. Most people do not know what compression is or have an incomplete knowledge of what it does. This may be because compression has meant different things over the years.
In the past, compression referred to the tightness of the windings around the core (which was 3 pieces). It was discovered that the better performing golf balls were the ones with tighter windings.
Nowadays, compression refers to the amount of deformity the ball will undergo after meeting a compressive force. This is because at the moment of impact, the golf ball will flatten and then spring off the club as round as ever.
What Is The Best Compression For A Golf Ball?
Most golf balls are purchased with a compression rating between 80-110. The lower the number, the more the ball will deform. Players with a slow swing are better off with a lower rating but players with a high swing speed will prefer the higher compression.
Women have typically slower swing speeds, so they usually opt for the lower compression rated golf balls. Men, tend towards the opposite.
It must be noted that a higher compressed golf ball will not fly farther. The distance a ball travels is still mainly up to the golf and their swing and how solidly the club meets the golf ball.
